Quoth the Invoice, “Nevermore!”

Quote the Invoice, "Nevermore"!

Halloween is just around the corner, so we’ve decided to repeat one of our most popular postings. With sincere apologies to Edgar Allen Poe’s, “The Raven.”

Once upon a midnight dreary while I pondered weak and weary

Over many a quaint and curious month’s end of accounting lore,

While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,

As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my office door.

“Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my office door –

Only this, and nothing more.”

So I went and flung the shutter, when, with many a flit and flutter,

In there flew a paper invoice I had paid in days of yore;

Not the least apology made it; not a minute stopped or stayed it;

But as though it just belonged here, perched beside my office door-

Perched upon the last year’s ledger just beside my office door –

Perched and sat and nothing more.

Then this paper bill beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,

By the so familiar PO number that it blithely wore;

“Surely invoice, I have paid you, filed away and therefore saved you.

Yet you sit here simply staring, staring as if you want more.

You’ll not get another penny. Disappear from out my door.”

Quoth the invoice, “Nevermore.”

“Paper,” said I, “thing of evil – paper still, if bill or devil!

I may yet avail myself of e-invoicing and what’s more

I will add in automation, AP workflow implementation.

But I’ll stop from doing that if you will stay far from my door.

Just please tell me if you’ll stop appearing back here, I implore.”

Quoth the invoice, “Nevermore.”

And the invoice, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

On the top of last year’s ledger just beside my office door;

Had I simply automated I would now feel so elated

Why do I still process paper, I sit wondering, and what’s more

If I don’t use e-invoicing all this paper and this chore

Shall be lifted – nevermore!

“Paper,” said I, “thing of evil – paper still, if bill or devil!

If I don’t use e-invoicing all this paper and this chore

Shall be lifted – nevermore!
