The challenge

Stericycle is a leader in medical waste recycling as well as secure documentation destruction through its Shred-it service. The company’s suite of essential services helps clients properly dispose of potentially harmful medical waste, shred confidential information, and protect their trusted patient and customer relationships.

With trucks averaging nearly nine years old, the company was burdened with excessive maintenance and repair costs. At the same time, its full-service lease model offered limited flexibility and control over how and when maintenance was handled, further compounding costs and operational inefficiencies.

The solution

Stericycle partnered with Corcentric Capital Equipment Solutions (CCES) to transition from a full-service lease to a more strategic, cost-effective fleet management model. By adopting Corcentric Analytics for Fleet Efficiency (Cafe), the company gained the tools needed to take full control of its fleet lifecycle and expenses.

Corcentric leveraged Stericycle’s historical operational and financial data to move to a non-full service lease model, structure leases around each asset’s optimal lifecycle, and enable real-time maintenance trend analysis and cost tracking.

Stericycle now uses 56 customer fleet performance reports, including 10 key daily reports, to make data-driven decisions. These analytics have also supported strategic procurement, with Stericycle replacing approximately 2,600 trucks over three years, better aligning assets with operational needs.

“Corcentric has integrated all of our fleet data and has worked hand in hand with us to create these unbelievable tools we can use to drive results, and that’s what it’s all about,” says Bill Snyder, retired VP of Global Fleet Engineering for Stericycle.

In addition to analytics, Corcentric supported prototype development for specialized Shred-Tech and Shred-Fast vehicles, introduced ergonomic improvements to more than 800 of Stericycle’s 26-ft box trucks, and helped design dual-purpose trucks for document shredding and medical waste collection. These innovations boosted safety, efficiency, and adaptability.

The results

Corcentric’s commitment to being responsive and collaborative has made them an invaluable partner. The transformation delivered results well beyond expectations, including:

  • Fleet age reduced from 8.9 years in 2021 to 3.5 years in 2024
  • Millions saved: $6.8M saved in 2023 (vs. $1.2M planned)
  • Idle time reduction saved $1.56M and cut millions of pounds of carbon emissions
  • Competitive edge gained through operational flexibility and performance

Stericycle’s team and Corcentric’s fleet experts communicate daily to address challenges and improve fleet management. Whether its lifecycle sweet spot analysis, design improvement, or truck procurement, Corcentric always makes sure Stericycle’s needs are met promptly and effectively.

“What’s great is, we don’t waste time re-doing things we’ve requested,” says Snyder. “With Corcentric, it’s unbelievable – it’s right the first time and we can take it and make something happen.”
